Short biography
Judith Michael is the pseudonym of the husband-and-wife writing team of Judith Barnard (born 1934) and Michael Fain (born 1937). Barnard has worked as a journalist, educational film writer, biographer and editor. She received a B.A. from Ohio State University and an M.A. from Northwestern University. Under her own name, she wrote the novel The Past and Present of Solomon Sorge (1967). Fain has worked as an engineer for NASA, was president of an electronics company in Canada, and published numerous scientific articles under his own name. Jointly, under their two names, Barnard and Fain published articles on marriage and the family in Redbook, Readers' Digest, Ladies Home Journal, among others. As Judith Michael, they published eleven highly successful contemporary novels.
When Judith Barnard and Michael Fain began writing their first novel, Deceptions, in 1982, they sat at desks three feet apart in the second bedroom of a tiny apartment and wove words into fantasies. Now, fifteen years and eight bestsellers later, the couple who writes as Judith Michael (one name is easier for readers to remember), works in separate offices in elegant homes, one in Aspen and one in Chicago.

From the husband-and-wife writing team of Judith Michael comes this potboiler which plays on one of the oldest fantasies in the book: What if you not only had a twin, but decided one day to trade places... just for a little while. What begins as a lark for sisters Stephanie and Sabrina quickly turns into so much more in this surprisingly satisfying read in which, perhaps not surprisingly, we are taught to be grateful for what we have for the grass is not always greener on the other side. For show more most of us, the perhaps unconscious thrill lies in the story of Stephanie, the twin whose life in suburbia has become almost stifling, especially when compared to that of her exotic, exciting twin sister, Lady Sabrina Longworth. Quicker than you can say, "Hey, what if we traded places?" Stephanie is living the high life, while Sabrina is trading cocktail parties for backyard bar-b-ques. show less

I would have rated this book a full star higher before I read the last page. What a stupid, stupid ending.
A fashion designer from Boulder, Colorado, who has never really traveled much before, Miranda goes to China to meet with suppliers. She is immediately overwhelmed by the crowds at the airport and is 'rescued' by Yuan Li, the owner of a local construction company. Through the course of her trip, he shows her around the city, teaches her how to use chopsticks, and confronts her prejudices show more about his country, educating her about the place she's visiting. (She comes off as both naive and kinda racist in the beginning of the book). Also, they fall in love. Will he move to America to be with her? Will she stay in China?
SPOILER: OR they could come to the rather obvious conclusion that neither of them have the kind of job where they have to live in one place year round and they can just spend half the year in each country, which would be a great experience for Miranda's kids, but instead she just gets on a plane and leaves and they agree never to see each other again because neither of them is willing to move, which is seriously the stupidest thing I've ever heard.

Inheritance is the first novel I've read by this husband and wife team, and I must say it was engaging. In the vein of Barbara Taylor Bradford, it's the sweeping love story of Laura Fairchild, a poor orphan, and her epic love for Paul Janssen, a wealthy member of the Salinger family. Although somewhat stereotyped, the characters are deeply flawed, making them authentic and believable. The plot is complex and sometimes wanders, yet not too far-fetched if you let your imagination go. I did show more have a slight problem with the conclusion. It wasn't quite as rewarding as I'd hoped, but all in all, a good—if not lengthy—read. show less
