One of the attractions of Montaigne is his accidentalism or his acceptance of distraction. He seems to write about whatever crosses his field. So this "autobiography" would seem to be an ill-advised attempt to put some order and chronology to Montaigne's musings. But somehow it works. The editor and translator, Marvin Lowenthal, does a good job of compiling and rearranging Montaigne's various writings here. It's not a substitute for the Essays, but it's not a bad way to read Montaigne. show more Lowenthal's introduction is pretty good too. show less
