He was also the first to lose his life in a flying accident to such a machine. This book looks at his life and work, and the influence of other pioneers in Europe, Australia and the show more USA. Describes the efforts of Percy Pilcher to perfect a powered glider in the late 1800s. Percy Pilcher is known chiefly as the first hang-glider pilot in Great Britain. He died in 1899 when the tail of his glider failed (3 years after the death of Otto Lilienthal). While demonstrating his glider the “Hawk” to prospective investors in a powered glider (a triplane), the tow rope broke on the first two attempts and on the third it’s structural failure resulted in Pilcher’s death. show more target="_top">https://www.journals.uchicago.edu/doi/abs/10.1086/354588 show less
