Agree with "duller than dirt, but useful" and would add that it's doorstop-sized. Nicely supplemented in my case with lively lectures and Peggy Johnson's "Fundamentals of Collection Development". Comprehensive, a good reference. Becomes more outdated every year in terms of electronic resources and selection methods, but new editions address those issues.
If it wasn't for school I would not be reading a management book. that said, this one was painless. It focuses on practical examples relating to libraries and other information centers and explains concepts in clear language. I would not have read it for fun, but it was easy to read and get ideas from.
This is a well-written book (4 stars) on something I find extremely tedious (1 star): library management. I averaged and rounded up to 3 stars.
Developing Library and Information Center Collections: Fifth Edition (Library and Information Science Text Series) by G. Edward Evans
This series of books all run along the same line - they are good basic books that do no go overly deeply into the subject matter. As someone who has no personal experience working in libraries, I found some good information in this book, perhaps more than other books in this series, but still not quite enough to justify the textbook level price. I think that this book would be far too remedial to be of much value for someone who has worked in a library already.
