"Chew" is warped, offbeat, crazy, hilarious, and above all.. brilliant. It's character-driven with a perfect balance of action, suspense, and laugh-out-loud humor. I could barely stomach my enjoyment of this series; it's just that damn good! It's probably NOT a good idea to eat food while reading because it holds back nothing when it comes to describing its contents--literally. You can expect a considerable amount of violence, action, mystery, with a splash of horror decorating each page show more with graphic imagery of all of the above. Cleverly concise dialogue and truly out their characters lend itself to a ridiculously intriguing, strangely addicting story not to be missed. show less
I started in on this series after it had ended, and I am very happy I made that choice. It would've driven me a bit mad constantly waiting for the next issue. The series is addictive as it is funny and engaging. The artwork is fantastic, the palette vibrant, and the plot a series of twists and turns that is consistently catching me by surprise - not just with the big things, but also the little details. It's clear [author: John Layman] really knows what he's doing.
This volume just... It's show more difficult to go into the details without giving things away. Suffice to say, you'll see more Poyo, more Toni, more Caesar and Colby. The humor hit hard and relentlessly, especially with the Poyo plots and had me laughing harder than I have yet with the series. Then the serious plot kicked in in all of its beauty and.. gods did it hit me hard. I didn't expect that from the comic, and I have to say it raised the bar in a truly beautiful way.
Chew is hitting all of the right notes for me and I can't wait to read more. It's been a crazy ride so far, and I find myself caring about these characters more than I ever expected. I love these books, and I'm going to be recommending the hell out of them for a long time to come. show less

Alien fire writing in the sky, murderous recipes, space stations exploding, millennial doomsday anti-chicken cults and magic bullets made from meteorites - events are in train in the world of Chew as some sort of possibly chicken-associated apocalypse appears to be approaching. Tony Chu, FDA cibopath, and his cyborg partner and homicidal boss and adorable sister and assorted allies and enemies move through a strange, surreal world of food crime and food powers trying to put all the pieces show more together before it's too late. Also, there is POYO. show less
It'd be difficult to find a comic out there with a premise as dementedly original as this one, or one that follows through to the outer limits of the surreal logic of that premise. Tony Chu is a cibopath - whenever he eats something he gets sensations of what that thing experiences when it was alive. Since Chu is also a cop, this sounds like a particularly odd pitch for a procedural, special powers being used to solve weekly murders. It starts out that way, sort of, but by the time we reach show more the end of volume one, it's already heading out for shores unknown to any police procedural ever seen on this planet before.
In the world of Chew, chicken has been banned after an outbreak of avian flu. After a bloody encounter in a chicken speakeasy reveals his gift, Chu is drafted into the FDA, whereupon things start to get really weird and sinister not to mention grotesque and violent, but mostly hilarious. Poor Chu's gift is a terrible one, but the story twists and turns and veers of constantly in unexpected directions and can go from madcap to heartbreakingly horrifying in a single panel transition. At the end of this volume one, Chu is sorer, sadder, but not much wiser about what the heck is going on. Chew is a wild ride, and it's barely getting started. show less
