Being a lavishly illustrated coffee table history of cartography up to early modern times. The text is very substantive and the many examples of maps are appealing. The chronological coverage sputters to a halt far too soon, though. This should have been titled "The Mapmaker's Art vol.1 : to 1700"
I love this book. I consider this a bargain at $30. Not only does it have city plans from 1500-1600, but it has a lot from Spain, and people are frequently featured along with ships.
Important map reference book for North America up to 1860 (85) fine map reproductions in full color very well done
