I DNFed this last December (2013) and tried again just now, but only got a few pages in this time. I got about half way through last year, but all its flaws just didn't let me enjoy the exciting premise.
And the premise really is interesting; it had a lot of potential which I was totally rarin' to enjoy. But then the insta-love and obsession just killed it for me. No, NO, just NO! Sure, you can use it as an excuse not to actually develop trust and feelings between the MCs during the course show more of the story, but I'm not going to like it or keep reading it. Especially since one of them has never even had homosexual desires before, the necessary suspension of belief just doesn't work out for me.
Besides that, I vaguely remember all these other characters and sub-plots that bored me further, causing me to struggle and then soon stop altogether.
Wish I could read this premise done in a sensical, effective way. *sighs* But like the Stones said, you can't always get what you want. Damn it though, I do try. show less

Oy, why no Syren Rua books? I need a Syren Rua book and I need it now! Avril! Pleeeeeeeease!
With Call the Coroner Avril Ashton managed to bring to paper one of my deepest, darkest and most perverted literary fantasies **clap clap clap**. Thanks to all my friends for recommending this book. Since ever I dropped in the middle of the most awesome reader group (MM romance), I’ve been getting dozens recommendations for Call the Coroner. Can’t believe I waited to read it this bloody long!
The show more trick with Call the Coroner is to take your time reading it and take little pauses when you find yourself bored. There are moments when it’s a little slow, and moments when it’s too fast. And moments when it’s a little repetitive. But overall it’s goooooood, and if you like the dark books and can stomach *ahem* the torture and a little blood, this is going to be a winner, baby. (Yes, this is who I am now, talking about torture and blood as if they’re ingredients to cake.)
The thing that amazed me the most about this book: I believed the relationship. Never thought I would, because, duh, insane, but I did.
The sex. Damn! The hate-sex? Hot Damn!
The MCs? *wolf howl*
The plot? Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz *snores*-- but who cares about the plot when you have a mafia boss denting walls and moving furniture around the room with a high class assasin? I don’t! Not one bit. Nope! Clash those swords gentlemen! En garde!
My friend Simone reminded me that I forgot to mention the cheese at the end that got the MCs a little "out of character", so BEWARE the CHEESE! The cheese was not very bad, actually a little cute, like watching two doberman eating peanut butter.

There is a fantastical place that exists in my soul, my godforsaken mother f-ing soul....it is a little bit Oz, a little bit Mount Olympia, a little bit country and a little bit rock and roll with a dash of Sunnydale thrown in because Sunnydale rocks. It is populated by dangerously hot men who feel things more deeply and look so much better naked than the men of our mortal plane. It is spoken of only in whispers and in prayers and in the gayest penthouse letters to Santa. I am of course show more talking about my M/M Hall of Fame. The rare breed that get to reside within its hallowed halls include
- Push by K Nyla
- Heated Rivalry by Rachel Reid
- the Captive Prince series by C.S. Pascal
- Wrath by Ella James
-and everyone's golden child Him by Sarina Bowen and Elle Kennedy
Call the Coroner was let into this Top tier in a ceremony held earlier this evening.
This book gave me all the thrills, chills and feelz. Once things really started to heat up it also put me in a constant state of... Well heat. This mother was hot.
I didn't think there was anyway these 2 could have gone from point A to anything resembling love but they did And I believed it. And I loved it. show less

Juan Pablo Castillo, former #2 of Los P gang, now the boss man is in a world of unrequited love angst. He still carries a torch for his former boss and it hurts...he hurts. And his enemy's lackey, Devon McGhee is the perfect person to take his frustration out on. If only he could stop thinking about him. But he can't.
When Dev and Juan Pablo start a scene, it leaves a trail of steam in their wake. These two have their secret rendezvous and I'm liking lots! Bad guys fucking...mmmhmmm hot!
And show more everything was going swell because bad boys and I are like peanut butter and jelly when it comes to my fiction choices. Then 45% happens, BAM! I got donkey punched in my nonexistent balls!
I so did not see that plot twist! In fact I had to investigate a past chapter to see if I noticed any clues. How the fuck did I not notice? Well done, Ms. Ashton.
So Dev and Juan Pablo, to me their love was a case of insta-love but their struggles was worth the craziness of it all. I could taste their sexual tension. Rough sex, crazy ass antics (can you say strangulation and knife points anyone?) Both acts were in the heat of the moment and I love characters that great cray-cray for one another. But these men seem to tone it down for the most part. And we get glimpse of Angel and Gabe (yay!), Syren is still his naughty self and this Mateo...I want to play with him.
Why not 5 STARS? Well the outcome of J.P.'s career...eh, tied up too neatly for me. Plus MANTEARS (while yes, it's less than book #1...I could have done without a few scenes of those)
(I love this gif BTW)
I rated [b:Love the Sinner|13615101|Love the Sinner (Brooklyn Sinners, #1)|Avril Ashton|http://d202m5krfqbpi5.cloudfront.net/books/1335270883s/13615101.jpg|19216095] 3.5 stars. I kept feeling more feminine vibes from the male characters in book #1. Not so much in this Sinner, Savior". I find book #2 to be better, somewhere in the 4-4.25 range.
So in closing:
Strangling is just another form of love -
I learned something new.
I anticipate more cray cray (hopefully) in the next book." show less
