The brutal and morbid nature of O'Sullivan's book of short stories still has the power to shock in 2026--it's no wonder it was so scandalous when published in 1896. It succeeds because O'Sullivan knows how to write. His descriptions of people and places are evocative, but straightforward. His style doesn't call attention to itself; it just succeeds in telling each of these seven tales very well indeed. There's a deal with the devil, a murderous obsession, and just plain murder. You won't show more emerge from reading this one unscathed. show less
This collection of excellent prose poem/essays contains a tale occasionally included in horror anthologies: "Will". Generous when in funds, O'Sullivan died penniless and forgotten in occupied Paris -his body and belongings thrown in a common pit.
Hmmmmm, if you just refuse to admit you are dead, does that make alive again? That’s the quandary in which this protagonist finds himself. It’s not a good place to be. A creepy story.
