I received an advance review copy of Duck Duck Goose by Hank Shaw (Ten Speed Press) through NetGalley.com.
Do not be misled by the publisher's blurb. There are few recipes in this book suitable for supermarket duck. If someone in your farmers market has specialty ducks, you have more options, but the focus here is wild duck, tasty and not so much, shot personally by the cook.
Hank Shaw writes a good cookbook. Clear and crisp. Do this, DON'T do that. I enjoyed reading it and highly recommend show more it as a purchase for wildfowl hunters. show less

I enjoy foraging as a hobby, fished as child growing up in Alaska, and am thinking about hunting some deer this fall on our property in our overpopulated with deer area. Though I would not use this book as a field guide for identification, I enjoyed the memoir like musings of the author's experiences from childhood and beyond in foraging, fishing and hunting. The included recipes are simple and not overblown, a good starting point for dreaming up ways to used the gathered bounty. I'd show more recommend this book to people who already forage and like reading about it and for those people new to foraging, or thinking about it, who want a sense of what it is like and what you can do with it practically. Hunt, Gather, Cook is a nice addition to the foraging library but not a field guide. show less
An interesting tour through the authors experiences an endeavors gathering wild plants and hunting and fishing. I've been on his website several times as I've beeb searching info about wild plants, berries, and such. One item of interest as I skimmed this (I didn't read the entire book... but did for the sections that intetested me) eas on sea robins... I remember an outing with my father 45 years ago whe we went to Cape Cod and out on a party fishing boat... all most people caught were sea show more robins... and the crew assisting the fishers didn"t touch them.
Overall... this Rodale Press book presented the information in a well delivered package. show less
