This comes from a solid series called Animal Safari that's designed for the earliest emerging readers. Quite frankly, a series on wild animals for emerging readers is just about the best thing that I could add to my shelves. This, books about pets, and books about characters from their favorite TV shows and movies are the only requests I get. I have to introduce every other part of the library to them. So when I can add more than a dozen different titles that are age-appropriate and show more text-apporpriate, I jump at it.

I liked this one mostly because it's about meerkats, animals whose social structure fascinates me in the same way that prairie dogs, gophers, bees, and ants do. Whenever we say that this group of humans or that group of humans came up with the first organized government, I always think of these animals that follow their own form of government and have done for much longer than any group of humans.

I wasn't crazy about the subject matter of this book, mostly because hyenas are among the more intimidating land creatures on our planet. Never mind a big cat or some other large predator. Hyenas are tough, smart, relentless, and resourceful. This book demonstrated all of that. The book was good. I'm just not that crazy about hyenas. Maybe it's the laugh.

This book provides a very brief look at chameleons. There's not a ton of information contained herein, just the highlights of where they live, what their natural predators are, etc. Every page spread has only a couple of sentences and then a full-page photograph. This book is useful for children who are just learning to read and want to be able to read a book on their own with minimal struggle. A glossary at the end of the book defines bolded words from the rest of the text, including show more commoner words like "opposite" as well as the more scientific ones like "savannah." An index and recommendations for further reading round out this title. show less

I love rhinos, so this book works for me. I'm sure it will work in my library.
