The battle of Vicksburg from inside the besieged city. Young belle, engaged to oh-so-proper Southern officer (a jerk!), finds herself attracted to handsome enlisted man with no pedigree. Excellent picture of the siege, and the disappearing Southern culture.
Novel about a political campaign involving Daniel Webster in New England in 1840
