Miles takes a scholastic approach to the history of Christmas as celebrated over the (mostly Western) world. It is in a similar vein as The Golden Bough, and while some of the language and sentiments expressed may raise the eyebrows of contemporary readers, this 1912 work of research still offers valuable information. It can be a little sad to read of customs no longer practiced, realizing how much is lost in the passing of time, but fun to recognize those traditions that still remain, and show more think about the possible reasons why some practices persist and others do not. The author covers customs over the entire course of Christmastide: Advent to Epiphany with a few notes extending to Candlemas. show less
Originally published nearly 100 years ago, Miles's book is a classic reference work on Christmas customs and traditions. He traces the history of Christmas music, literature, decorations, food, drink, and other aspects of the season as celebrated around the world. Customs that seem obscure to twenty-first century Americans, such as mumming and mummers' plays, are explained in detail. There are many footnotes and a thorough index. This is a must-read book for those wanting to do historical show more research on Christmas. show less
