There is a bookstore in Lawrence, Kansas, that is called The Dusty Bookshelf, which specializes in older books. While on vacation I came upon this book upon which my first thoughts were: I like this cover, the name is interesting and I bet the story is about average. Glad to say that the story is more than average.
Following many vintage young adult books the story is basically about a child, her fears and her desires as well as the world delivering her not what she wants. It is a story of a show more family finding out just how much they mean to each other as they go through changes and to letting go of fear to help bond with one another.
The writing is short, charming and easy to read so a great book for young adults that are leaving the world of children's books for a bit older books. With puppies, books and a spirited yet emotionally realistic heroine this book is one to capture the mind for those who may come upon it. show less

Susannah's father brought her to live with the Shakers; she doesn't like it there and tries to decide whether to leave or help protect the settlement and her friend from danger.
This book has many interesting facts about the shaker religion. I did not realize how unaccepted they were by "outsiders" until I read this short book. I have visited shaker village in KY and found it interesting. I also did not realize tha they believed the founder of the church (a woman) was Christ returned.A eye opener to how misled people cna be.
