Despite how basic this game is, I am giving it 5 stars. Compared to today's games, it is definitely very basic, and the replay value is there, but not without limits. You can choose a different set of roles for your team from Black/White/Red Mage, Fighter, Thief, and Monk. There are options so the gameplay is not the exact same every time, but this is a 1980s game. If I were to rate this game entirely on its own and not its contribution to video game history, I'd give it a 3/5 stars.

Nintendo show more came out with a remake of this game for the GBA, along with a remake of Final Fantasy II, called Dawn of Souls. I do recommend you give this version a try if you like Final Fantasy, the game mechanics are smoothed out as well as various other features to make it more enjoyable, and there are also bonus dungeons.

A vital piece of FF history. Respect the old school.
