An utterly gorgeous animated film, and with a story and tone that both, particularly for its time, are quite nuanced and mature while still accessible to children. The protagonist's quiet, dignified bravery both for her children and for the characters she meets is a fine example for emulation. If I were to find two minor peeves, they'd be that the mythology is a little underdeveloped, and the ending always feels like it comes prematurely, both of which I suspect are due to the film's short show more 80 minute running time (which in turn is likely a result of the limited budget). Possibly Don Bluth's finest work, though depending of course on personal taste, "American Tail" in particular might be able to edge it out. Regardless, it is warmly recommended to any fan of animated films, adult and child alike. show less
This was produced in 1997, when there was still speculation that Grand Duchess Anastasia Romanovna had survived the Russian Revolution. I think a lot of people were rooting for it, because the Romanovs really did deserve better than the end they were given at the hands of their executors.

This movie is pure fiction. It's a cute story with some gorgeous visuals and a handsome male lead and some singing, and the relationship between Anastasia and her grandmother is sweet, but this is all show more fiction. Rasputin was rumored to have evil powers, or work with demons, or whatever, IRL and that was a very heavy basis for this move version of Rasputin who is literally a undead sorcerer now because of a deal he made with a devil. In the end, the forces of good do win, and it's the kind of ending I'd have wanted for Anastasia and her grandma.

In the late 2000s, the remains of the last Romanovs were found so the whole family is accounted for. It's really sad to have Anastasia's fate confirmed that way.

Stylishly dumb entertainment for kids. I guess it takes a real grown-up sophisticate to wonder why the female alien weapons master has such human-like breasts. Just an evolutionary convergence, I guess. Some of the large scale non-action scenes, as the ship flies through attractive artwork can be enjoyed, but that means that all the rest, the part with the characters, is a let down.
I didn't remember much from when i saw it as a kid, so I watched it again a few years as an adult. I love history, this movie had a few dark moments like you see in a lot of Don Bluth animated films. Overall it's not a bad movie, but it's a bit aged.
