In amongst Sooty's toys are a cricket bat, stumps and ball, next to a box marked Chock - is this an oblique reference to a throwing controversy? Was Sweep a chucker?
Being a collector of a certain author makes one ripe for the picking by other enthusiasts, or, as Morley might term them, "kinspirits". One might guess that Berlove has some sort of association with the exhibitor, Rush Rhees Library, University of Rochester. Oddly, my degree is from the Rochester Institute of Technology. Another Upstate New Yorker? At some point I began to think that I had collected Morley thoroughly, but Berlove seems to have collected Morley more thoroughly than I. He may show more have had deeper pockets. I see that he has a first edition of Morley's first book, The Eighth Sin. Though I have the content of that title, I do not have a first which is too expensive for me. show less
I have often said that a good book has the effect of making the reader want to read other books. This is a collection of catalogs of the Roochvarg collection. Reading a catalog such as this one, it is easy to want to read scores of other books or read about scores of other persons (bibliophiles).
Alida Roochvarg had one of the most comprehensive books about books collections, six catalogues worth. When she acquired the last book she wanted for her collection, she saw no reason to continue collecting books about books and sold her collection. Personally, I will enjoy reading my books even after I stop collecting them.
