Ms. Devin has the ability to eloquently and accurately put words and descriptions to complicated feelings I have struggled with throughout my life in a way I haven't found since Prozac Nation. I admire her strength and honesty in writing her story and sharing it so courageously with the world. I hope she knows now beyond any shadow of a doubt that she IS a writer.
I commend Jane Devin's first book effort.
The Elephant Girl is a realistic view of a woman's life that actually makes readers look at their own lives and say "I don't have it so bad after all."
This woman's life is a life filled with low moments. Just about the time you think that things can't get any worse, they do. But...this woman survives. From one low-paying job to the next, from one disappointment to another, she makes it through, and just about the time when even she feels that she show more can't take it anymore, she comes to the realization that she is what she is and that's enough.
Jane Devin writes well, and if the success of this book stands on readers being emotionally spent after reading it, then it should be successful.
Throughout the book, I found myself wanting just one really good thing to happen to her or just one thing to go her way, but, like life, sometimes we get caught up in really desperate situations, and it's how we deal with those events that make us who we are. show less

This book pulled me in by the heart through a little girls heart and voice through her life to adulthood. There were times I laughed and many more times I cried. The ending was as it should be.....Jane is a wonderful character/
You know those books where from the moment you put it down to the time you can pick it back up again has you wondering around wide-eyed and not wanting to do anything else except get back to the story? This is that book.
