Alan Jacobs is a civilian who has been riding with the Chicago Fire Department for years. He holds a CFD I.D. from the Commissioner as a photographer. He rides for 24-hour shifts with engines, trucks and with Chiefs, and also does photo work for the CFD. He is the only civilian to be honored with a permanent exhibition of his work at the CFD Training Academy. Additionally he is involved in compartive genocide studies, and is co-editor of H-Genocide online. He is also editor of the online IDEA, a journal of social issues, and a contributing editor at the Cybrary of the Holocaust, remember.org. He was commissioned by the State Museum at Auschwitz to do an online virtual tour in 2004. He is retired from the practice of psychotherapy and therapist training, having authored many titles in that field and social science. He received the Eric Berne Award for theory in 1996. In his youth he tied an American record in the 70 yard dash.
