I have read the previous four books in this series and none of them failed to glue me to my seat, forsaking all my chores and responsibilities just to find out what happens on the next page. This book is no different. The cast of characters provides something for everyone, even if you are a woman who previously would NEVER pick up a book with anything vaguely military on the cover (that would be me, I am certainly glad I picked these up!!). Shawn Chesser has a way of making you care about show more these characters, feel what they feel, experience the pain of their losses and the joy in their achievements. I have found myself fist-pumping the ass-kicking they bring to the enemies, whether that be zombie or evil human, and then weeping at the loss of much-loved friends in this series. Do yourself a favor and immerse yourself in this world for awhile. You will be glad you did. show less
Let me begin by saying that prior to purchasing a book I always read the reviews. Good and Bad, yet I hate wasting my time reading reviewers that post negative comments regarding a books "punctuation". UGH. If punctuation issues were a reason to hate a book, Cormac Mccarthy wouldnt have any Pulitzers.,,This book was even better than the first, Trudge. Edge-of-your-seat action just keeps coming and these people seem so real, you just have to root for them and keep reading to see what happens show more around the next zombie-strewn corner. There is a bit of military action and yet it does not overwhelm the storyline, so again, a well-balanced story that will keep you up all night, not from nightmares, because you wont be able to put it down. show less
Freaking great read, I just loved how instead of the virus sweeping across the country/world quickly and we read about things then, the virus is currently contained (well somewhat anyway) and we get to see Lee and Tara as they try and make their way out of it and complete the last promise Lee made to their Mum. Some great action, nail biting, LOL and "are you kidding me" moments made this a truly addictive read. I was continually checking how much of the book I had left as I did not want it show more to finish and now eagerly await the next book to see what crazy things Lee, Tara and now Steve-O. show less
I'm a total Shawn Chesser geek. I'm not ashamed of it! He writes incredibly exciting and action-packed novels. His latest release in the Surviving the Zombie Apocalypse series, Mortal, delivered as expected.

Mortal is full of action and likable characters. His story line is well thought out and gripping. Well into the series, Chesser wastes no time with introductions or build up. Because, frankly, it's already there. his books end in such a way that readers are left with no choice but to read show more new installments to find out what comes next. Mortal starts with a bang...or rather, a crash. The helicopter containing a small military team goes down in a graveyard and (the men that live through the crash) must get back to base.

Chesser's work is less outright zombie horror and more strategic. A game of Risk, anyone? I know zip about the military. But Shawn's expertise in that area makes it easy to slide into the action. Just call me General Monster!

There were moments in Mortal that had me downright laughing. His use of a character named Lieutenant Ben Dover. As soon as I saw the name, I lost it. I gave him a little golf clap for having the balls to use it. I was literally rofl'ing over here. I rated Mortal four stars. I still love the series, but it felt as if something was missing. One big battle, some more shock and awe. Don't get me wrong, Mortal was still full of great action, but there could have been more. Maybe I'm just being selfish because I have expectations solidified from his previous work. Does it change my opinion of the author? Nope. Does it make me question if I will read future books in the series? Hell no. I'm all in!
