A very interesting and informative book. Though I have tried none, many of the recipes sound palatable. It is a collection of recipes from America throughout it's history. It also tells of some of the limitations cooks had and how cooking and ingredients have evolved over time. Written in the 60's, it has no modern recipes in it and that is interesting to read what the authors consider "modern."
THE WILLIAMSBURG ART OF COOKERY Or Accomplish'd Gentlewoman's Companion: Being A Collection of Upwards of Five Hundred of the Most Ancient & Approv'd Recipes in Virginia Cookery by Helen Duprey Bullock
A collection of recipes from the local inhabitants. Although gathered in the 1930's, the providers cite sources in their families back to the 1830's.
Recipes of Early America, The Young Republic, The Westward Empire and Victorian America. Good intros.
