Perhaps written for high school, Paradis creatively sets the scenes for various aspects of workers in the US. Beginning with the first indentured servants to the "Colonies" in the 1600's, through child labor in factories, to the creation of labor unions.
Of course, a lot has occurred since the 1960's, but this would be a good basis for understanding current events.
