I am simply glad this book exists
If youve dabbled in meditation or ever done therapy, its likely that the information this book provides wont be groundbreaking. As someone who's acquainted with both, i read it half because i genuinely like dan and his approach, half due to curiosity, and i must say: as a society, we needed this. Self help non fiction books arent a new thing, and im sure there are dozens of books out there that give out very similar information. But by writing it like this, show more so accessibly, and offering to a relatively young following, hes giving them tools that i believe previous generations didnt have at their disposal. And that is excelent. We really, really need that, and i think this book should be read by... all teenagers, period. Before shit starts to go down, if it hasnt already
Its not necessarily meant to be read in a linear way, which is super cool -you can pick it up and go back and forth and skip parts that dont serve you. It also doesnt treat itself as an absolute solution, and it will be the first to say "if your issue goes past these parameters, do not hesitate to see a professional", but it also offers specific, practical tools that do work (after all, everything was proofed by a therapist!). I think it could have gone a bit deeper on some topics, hence the star deduction, but regardless it says enough that if you come across something you think really resonates, you now know what to go research, since google is free. If anything, the book is an amazing starting point.
I read it in dan's voice the whole time, i love how present his (literary) voice is because its very unique, and it made the reading experience that much richer. Its funny and hopeful, and positive without going into the toxic realm. Not a read you do for fun, but one you should do regardless! show less

"Just make sure you remember that a billion coincidences had to occur for you to exist and each passing moment is a possibility for a new adventure."
-Phil Lester in The Amazing Book Is Not on Fire.
Dan Howell and Phil Lester's The Amazing Book Is Not on Fire is not perfect by any means but delivers on being a time capsule to this stage of Dan and Phil's life. I think it's perfect for fans but I can't imagine it'd be a very fun read for people who don't know who these two are due to the show more juvenile nature of the book, spelling errors, and lack of relevancy to a general audience.
I loved Dan and Phil growing up and still do. I remember when this book came out a decade ago, and I was ecstatic when I got it as an adult but in true testament to growing up a lot of the book's content seemed pointless and Dan and Phil's chemistry and personalities didn't shine they way they do in video format through words. I enjoyed the inside jokes they shared in this book but a lot of the content was recycled from their videos and things they have already talked about. Some of the content, knowing what we know now as a fanbase, wasn't even true. Maybe it just aged poorly? I couldn't really tell who the intended audience was because some of the topics were a bit too adult but the whole tone was clearly meant for children.
The way the book is put together is really odd and not the easiest to read. I like to read out loud when I'm alone and doing so was nearly impossible with The Amazing Book Is Not on Fire because of the way they chose to decipher themselves and words going different directions. Some of the book was even illegible due to the text being too small or handwriting being way too bad (Dan).
I think Dan and Phil could be extraordinary writers in a different tone and I'm looking forward to the day that they write a tell all memoir. show less

A really fun book by British YouTubers Dan Howell (danisnotonfire) and Phil Lester (AmazingPhil) called The Amazing Book is Not on Fire. The talk of the town on this book is how lovely it smells. I'm going to have to call 'bull' on that one as I found the smell to be off-putting. I wasn't at all impressed with the smell but I was impressed with the use of mixed media which ran the gamut from collages to excerpts of their text messages with one another. If you're a fan of their YouTube show more channels, it's a really fun ride but I think that even for those uninitiated into the fold it's a silly, smile-inducing book. show less
I bought this book back when it first released, but I never finished it. I kind of lost interest in Dan and Phil a couple of days after I bought the book, so I shoved it to the back of my dresser. I found it the other night and decided to reread and finish it this time. It was a good book, and they're both lovely writers, but since I don't pay much attention to them anymore, I had a hard time getting into it. I think I would have loved this book had I still been interested in them.
The book show more was funny, but you can tell they wrote it before their content change. I felt nostalgic while reading it. It caused me to remember just how chaotic they used to be (they still are, honestly). Reading it felt like I was watching one of their videos, especially during the back and forth parts. show less
