The book is about friendship. These two girls from two different cultures become best friends. The Navajo Girl shows her non-native American friend how her life is on the Navajo reservation and the little girl is so amazed at how she is taken in as a family member and is shown some Navajo traditions. The book is written as if the non-Native American girl is writing in her journal or writing a letter to her Navajo sister because in the end she ends with how much she misses her Navajo sister. show more

I really liked this book. I'm half Navajo and I was really touched by how real the story is because it could very well have happened. The book made me miss the Navajo reservation because I haven't seen it in a while but the area the book focuses on is an area of the reservation that is not in the dessert but where the mountains are which is closer to New Mexico. Loved it!

I definitely am going to add this to my collection of books and include this when there is a need to learn about culture differences and how even though there are differences long-lasting friendships can still be formed. And xenophobia is overcome.

Again, I would use this book to talk about culture differences in a class room and hopefully, emphasize the need for empathy and friendship between cultures. And, also, I would hope to relate that learning about something that is different than ourselves can be a good thing.

oop, and this is why you should check the flap before checking things out- this was an impulse grab from the picture books display, so I didn't realize this was about grief, from before the loss of a parent followed by afterward. A lovely, contemplative book for that intent.
Poet Luci Tapahonso and her co-authors present a wonderful guide to the ABCs that children of all cultures can enjoy. The color pencil illustrations in the copy I read are excellent, just a little more faded-looking than a book this vibrant needs.

Uses: A great book to help teach the ABCs as well as the traditions of Navajo culture.
I Have Another Language The Language Is Dance is the story of how a young girl expresses her emotions through dance. It begins with the morning of her first performance and ends that evening. The first page displays the little girl thinking about a dream she had but revealing that she can’t explain it with words. The last page shows the little girl laying in bed and feeling things that she can’t say but she will be able to express tomorrow when she dances again.

Dance was a huge part of show more my childhood and I still love to watch and participate in dance. My 3 year old is also very interested in dance right now so this was a wonderful book for us to share together.

In the classroom I would use this book as a way to stress the importance of physical activity and creative outlets. I would have the children write a couple of paragraphs about their favorite sport or hobby.
