David Westbrook has made some bad choices in his life and had some hard knocks but now he's starting over as a small town, farm vet. And kind of scrambling to get it together. And then a kid falls into a well and it all changes. I know… I know… this is lame. This book did not even sound interesting to me. At page 20, I was ready to put it down. At page 50, I was on the fence. 20 pages later I was so hooked that I was thinking about the characters and plot while doing other things. I show more can't even tell you why but it was one of the best things I've read this year. show less

A compilation of three novellas:

The Lawyer Lifeguard --- When a bomb destroys his car, defense attorney Brian Lord narrowly escapes death. His fiancée isn’t so fortunate. While he’s recovering, his boss visits his hospital room and tells him he no longer has a job at Garner and Mackey. Signing on as a lifeguard, he finds solace at the beach, unaware of the danger that stalks him.

The Doctor’s Plot --- Abi Brenner comes to Napa Valley as the new medical examiner. It’s a dream job in a show more dream location. But she is about to learn there is something quite sinister in this town . . . and the bodies of the murdered are piling up.

The Shut-In --- Tricia Celano suffers from a rare affliction and is a virtual prisoner in her apartment. Allergic to the sun and phobic about the dark, she flies her drone over the city in order to see the outside world. But on one of her innocent excursions, the drone’s camera sends her video of a murder and she decides to track down the killer. But the killer knows that Tricia is watching . . . .

Told with Patterson’s trademark short chapters, the stories are short on character development and lightning-fast on plot development. Tension-building plots keep the stories racing along and draw readers into the telling of the tale. Surprising twists keep readers guessing as each story unfolds and the suspense builds. Readers should remember, however, that not all stories end happily or as the reader expects. [Note to authors: unhappy readers are not a good thing.]

Recommended.

A short story about a lawyer who survives a bombing, only to find out he's a person of interest . Among the victims are his fiance; they were in the process of packing for a trip. Then he is unceremoniously fired from his job, runs into an old associate and begs her to allow him to return working for her as a lifeguard. He passes the test, but manages to keep his sordid customers from the law firm follows the breadcrumbs to some serious mobster types. And a girl he thought he knew very show more well.

This is a fast paced story, not terribly original but it'll keep you entertained if you have a couple of hours to kill.
