One of the best, January 23, 2006
Reviewer: Christopher T. Sommer "CTSommers" (Philadelphia, PA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This is probably my favorite of the Scientist albums I've heard (Who wouldn't love this cover art?), largely because I know and enjoy many of the vocal tracks from which these dubs are culled. Michael Prophet provides the inspiration for half of this album, as dubs of 5 tunes from Gunman and Righteous Are the Conqueror can be found here, most notably "You Are a No Good" ("Dance of the Vampires"), "Hold on to What You Got" ("Cry of the Werewolf"), and my favorite "Love and Unity" ("Your Teeth in My Neck"). The uncluttered drum and bass sound that made the vocal versions so compulsive come to the forefront here, and Scientist includes just enough vocal snippets to help keep the dubs from getting dull. Aside from Michael Prophet, Scientist dips into The Wailing Souls' pool for 3 cuts from Firehouse Rock, the best being the title track ("The Mummy's Shroud") and "Oh What a Feeling" ("The Voodoo Curse"). The cream of the crop on The Evil Curse of the Vampires, however, may be the funky digital wa-wa groove of "Blood on His Lips." Scientist knows not to screw around with producer Henry "Junjo" Lawes' original raw early dancehall sound, smartly keeping it intact on this strong set.

Yes, I became a fan of Scientist thru Grand theft auto 3. I also used to turn the game on and just listen to the music. Since then (2001) I have purchased many more dub albums and this is still one of my favorites (if not THE favorite). Every song on the album is a masterpiece, every sound fits perfectly, nothing feels out of place or random. What can I say? Scientist is a genius. If you're not a fan of dub this cd will make you one, or maybe you won't understand it at all. Either way, this cd deserves to be in your cd collection. Dub lovers especially must have this album.

Reviewer: Nicole (Chicago,IL USA) - See all my reviews
For something that started off as me listening to it from a game this album is beyond excellent. Many portions of it have been used in the wildly popular Grand Theft Auto III or GTA 3 for short. This album is so good that I would just turn on my Playstation 2 to listen to it and I wouldn't even be trying to play the game. The bottom line is this: even though this album is hard to find, it has soon-to-be legendary tracks and the melodies and words are enough to make you wanna move your body without even realizing why you're doing it. If you like dub, the real type of the music, then you'll LOVE this album, if you don't then click the back buttom and go buy the fake reggae that you hear on cruise ships to satisfy your listening pleasures.

Dub Masterpiece, October 8, 2005

This isn't pitchfork so i'm just going to talk about this album, forgive me if i can't find some elegant metaphor to structure this review around. First of all, the basslines on this album are THE BEST BASSLINES of all time, I have to get that out of the way, and if you're ever going uptown to score something at like 3 o'clock in the morning on a thursday and you put this CD in you will know what i'm talking about, because that strange, unfamiliar sensation is you FEELING LIKE A GANGSTER. I honestly think that this is the "hardest" music in existence.
that said, it's also incredibly mellow and groovy. i don't mean groovy as in "good" though "rids the world" is good. i mean you can groove to this CD, you could probably make love to it as well, but I would recommend Rev. Al Green for that over "Rids the World" unless you and your baby are on drugs.
The most important aspect of this 1981 Masterpiece, to me, is that this is a good, solid dub record that is, as far as i can tell, about destroying monsters, which is awesome. there need to be more songs with titles like "blood of the ghost of frankenstien and dracula" or whatever, it doesn't matter, because you can listen to this and do a drive-by, or you can just burn one by yourself, or you can go and put a stake in the foul heart of a child of the night, it doesn't matter because you're still going to feel pretty cool.

Heavyweight dub bout, April 21, 2001
Reviewer: Locks Lion (Iowa, United States of America) - See all my reviews
A nice little package, all in all...When Scientist runs into the Roots Radics on Maxfield Avenue, you know there's going to be trouble. It takes a while for things to really kick off...the first part of the program is characterised by some solid, though not particularly challenging dub excursions. It's the final five "bonus" cuts that really ignite; Scientist neatly sidesteps Tubby's long dub shadow and turns in a series of dubs that are all his own. So, at the end of the day, a worthwhile investment. Thanks to those folks down in St.Louis at Sound System for bringing this one to the light of day...
