A surprisingly enjoyable film from the early 1960s, although the feel and style are more 1950s. Doris Day is excellent as the unemployed small-town girl Cathy, who meets the wealthy boss Philip (Cary Grant) after his car splashes her on a rainy day.

There's not much chemistry between the two, but it's a cleverly written plot, as Philip's plans for Cathy clash with her small-town ideals. There's a lot of humour, most of it connected with Philip's assistant Roger (Gig Young) - it even made me show more laugh a few times as the choreography and pace is so very good.

There's nothing overt that would would trigger censorship, hence the rating is U; but innuendoes and implications abound, and the theme and story really isn't appropriate for children.

But for adults who like this style of film with more comedy than romance, I would recommend it.

The period re-enactment is lovely, of course, and the actors are fine. However, if you don't already know the story, the time-shifting and omission of critical elements will totally confuse you.
C+ (Okay).

I loved the scenes with Marty and Clara together. The stuff with Marty's family and friends, especially the third act, gets kind of hard to watch.

Every little girl who read this book at an early age can identify with the delightful orphan who trudges up the mountain to be rebuffed by the old grandfather, who was in time won over by her charm and kindness. She is a virtual "Pollyana" when she goes to the city to help the poor sick girl and finally brings her to the mountain for a cure. Heidi is the perfect heroine and every little girl sees herself in this role. It is a wonderful book, probably best read before the role is taken over show more by Shirley Temple in the movie.
Do little boys ever read Heidi ?
