This was an odd book to read. It was well written, had lots of action, and a satisfying ending, but the characters in it were just hard to take. They were crude and unbending in so many ways, casually cruel to family and friends, yet they were principled, true to themselves, and in their own way loyal to the people closest to them. I cannot say there was one character in the book that I actually liked. nevertheless, it was because of these unlikable characters that this a special book worth show more reading. show less

Sharp, empathic collection of linked stories centering on a mixed-race family in the rugged American West. The hardships aren't sugarcoated, but there is humor, loyalty and grace woven throughout. Vividly drawn characters make this an enjoyable read with emotional complexity.

I received this book today. I sat down to read for a while and just could not put the book down. From the first page to the last it held my attention. When the government and the invading settlers decided what the Indians needed and not caring what it would end of doing to them is vividly portrayed in the book. To have to give up a way of life and be put on a reservation was horrific. The government made the Indians dependent on them for a monthly stipend that barely covered the actual show more living expenses. The sexual abuse of the Jesuits. Many of the Indians turned to liquor to cope with the life they had to live. No longer free in the country that was theirs for centuries. I look forward to reading more of Sallie Bingham's books which I intend to do. show less

This was a beautiful and moving compilation of stories! I felt connected to each character, and they all felt so real and tangible. It navigates the depth of human struggles, like addiction and abuse, and how those issues can travel down generation to generation.
It was simultaneously very interesting and difficult to read, as there was some humor, but a lot of it was very heavy topics that are hard to read about.
