So glad Carrie's books are read by her. It just adds to the connection I feel when listening to them. Her life was obviously a mess, but while she was having an awful time, she made sure to make sure everyone around her was, at least sometimes, having a great time, because she's freaking hilarious. I love her word play, and the insight into the lives of some of the stars/famous people she hung around was interesting too. In this case Michael Jackson, Elizabeth Taylor and Ted Kennedy. show more In-between that she talks about her depression, addictions, and family life, along with a long section about electing to get shock therapy (and it working).
I feel like if you read all of her books in the same year they would probably get repetitive, this is my second and it had the same kind of feeling as the first. I loved both but I'll probably give it a year before I try my 3rd. show less

I was reading this book when my mom told me that Carrie Fisher died. I couldn't believe it. Out of all the celebrity deaths that happened this year, hers hit me the hardest; I sat on the couch and cried. I grew up watching Star Wars. Princess Leia was one of my idols growing up, and as I got older, I became a fan of Carrie Fisher as an author. She was always so unashamedly herself. The world is a little less bright without her.
When I got the news, I was just about to start the section that show more held her reprinted diary entries written during the filming of A New Hope and her affair with Harrison Ford. This was hard to read, if only because looking at such a life event through the eyes of a self-conscious 19-year-old with self-esteem issues and an incredibly dry wit was tough. Her insights and poetry are beautiful in their pain. But again, Carrie is (was?) Carrie, and she presented that time of her life with a 40-years-later outlook and a new appreciation (maybe even fondness) for her time as Leia, hair buns, metal bikinis and all. I certainly can't imagine Star Wars, or my childhood, without her, as I'm sure millions of others can't. She was a true original, and I'm glad she was able to give us this small look into her life before she left. show less

I wish I had read this before! It is hilarious and insightful. The late Carrie Fisher delivers in this book about her experiences being Princess Leia, the filming of the movies, her diaries, and her affair with Harrison Ford. She is not afraid to make fun of herself and the things she has done. She talks about being a celebrity and making fun of it. She looked inward at herself and shows how human she really was. I loved this book. Now, I must get the others and read them. I am going to miss show more her. Carrie Fisher, that is. Because as much as she is Princess Leia, she is first and foremost, Carrie Fisher. show less
Sigh. Definitely round up to 3.5. I loved the journal entries. She was so...introspective and her voice was so FAMILIAR! Painfully so, in some ways. I love her writing style. Amusingly, Harrison Ford seemed more like a concept rather than a person, so if that was her intent (or if that is how she felt) it definitely worked. I never got a sense of the man in any of the things she wrote about him. Seems appropriate, I guess, considering the circumstances.
She was a great writer. I'm going to show more miss her. show less
