I generally enjoyed this, though I didn’t read all of the articles in it (there are many). Some, mostly those about ethnographic theory, are pretty dry, but others give fascinating insight into gender as it factors into kinship, sexuality, labour, and all manner of other things.

Nancy Scheper-Hughes’ “Lifeboat Ethics: Mother Love and Child Death in Northeast Brazil” got me thinking about the complexity of motherhood and the complications that can result from disrupted or burdened show more bonding between mothers and their children, which set me on my own path towards writing a paper about maternal regret based on seven mothers I interviewed who regretted having children. show less
The title of this book is pretty misleading: before I read it, I thought it would be a dead bore. In fact, it's one of the best books on migration, especially for those new to the topic (as I was when I read it), that I've come across. The chapters are written by migration scholars from a variety of disciplines, including sociology and economics among others, outlining how different disciplines approach studying migration and what can be learned from the different approaches. It's really a show more pretty fascinating read and not anywhere near as dry and academic as the title makes it sound. show less
