I enjoyed "Land (Stranded Book 1)" by Theresa Shaver even though it is more directed to a teenage audience. When the story flows well, I usually overlook grammatical errors, typos and added words throughout the story - like this one. It's a story of survival! A group of Canadian students are on a trip to Disneyland in the U.S. when there is a bright flash and everything electrical stops. One of the teacher's being a prepper was quick to realize the disruption as an EMP attack which fried show more everything with a circuit board and electrical current. The students discuss their options, vote, and then split into 3 groups who will try different ways in getting back home.
This book follows five kids (3 boys / 2 girls) overland as they attempt to reach Canada on foot or by using whatever other transportation they could find. The group appear highly mature and plan their entire trip with the use of a map and some extra money that the teacher offered. There are both good things and bad that occur enroute...the teens get wiser as time goes on. Unfortunately, the book ends prematurely and readers will have to purchase book 2 (I thought) to see the outcome. However, when reading about the next installment, I found that it will be about one of the other two remaining groups back at Disneyland; book 3 then follows the third remaining group who go into LA. Since they all end in cliff hangers, I found that I would not find out about the continuation of this first group until book 4. Surmising that the books will all end in cliff hangers, I decided to pass on the rest of the series.
I would have been more invested into the series if each of the books followed the three groups simultaneously in their quest to get home - their exploits continuing in the next installment. However, from reading the book descriptions, it even appears like book 5 ends in a cliff hanger thus requiring another installment for the story to continue.
Sorry Theresa, you had me at the beginning of this story, unfortunately, the dynamics of the series being what they are made me lose interest. show less

This is the final book in the series and the storyline wrapped everything up nicely. It was, however, slower-paced than the first two books with fewer action scenes. The final 10% of the story will keep readers on the edge of their seats waiting to see if two of the main characters survive after the final battle. The author kept my interest throughout the series and left the door open for a sequel sometime in the future as this series only covered the beginning of the hardship. It would be show more interesting to see how everyone fared a couple of years in the future.
I was also disappointed in the number of typos found throughout the book. Most are real words but used in the wrong context and missing words. All in all, I'd recommend this series for anyone interested in learning what needs to be done in preparation for an apocalypse. show less

I enjoyed reading Flare: The Journey by Theresa Shaver. The main character is Lila Duncan, a Canadian prepper, who finds herself at a conference 400 miles from home when a solar flare hits the planet. Without hesitation, she gathers supplies onto a small wagon and heads off on a scooter to get back home to her two children. There are several times when her safety and trip were in jeopardy, but she does whatever was necessary to succeed. She also comes upon kind people who want to help show more her.
It's a harrowing journey filled with edge of your seat suspense. The ending has a cliffhanger which made me anxious to find out what happens next. I did download the next book and plan to get back into the story immediately. Highly recommended for all ages. show less

In this second book of the series, the author tells the story from the kid's POV since their separation from their father in addition to Lila's quest to locate her children. At Lila's brother-in-law's home, she finds out that her husband and mistress left the kids behind in the city. Brad's girlfriend is guilt-stricken and asked to accompany Lila on her search for the kids. She reluctantly agrees, and the two of them head toward the city.
There are some 'edge of your seat' times in both show more stories and readers will not be able to stop reading until the confrontations are over. Of course, this installment ends in another cliff-hanger. I did purchase the final book in the series to see how the story finally concludes.
I would have given 5 stars and didn't because of the number of typos in the story which caused me some pause before moving on. They were real words but used in the wrong context. It's a good series, so far, and I'd recommend it to all. show less
