José Luis Munuera

In changing 'Ebenezer' to 'Elizabeth' Scrooge, José-Luis Munuera does more than just gender-swap the Dickens Christmas classic. In A Christmas Carol: A Ghost Story, Munuera gives us a tale with a feminist twist that differs somewhat from the original, very gratifyingly: "The people of London had yet to determine whether Scrooge hand changed entirely, or a little, or not at all." Munuera's artwork in this graphic novel (which I read as a physical paperback; apparently it and the Kindle show more edition share an ISBN) is absolutely fantastic, gorgeous, atmospheric; I really like the character design of Elizabeth Scrooge. A wonderful ending. Munuera's inexplicable ability to merge Astérix-esque silliness with genuine and hard-hitting pathos and character drama is as stunning as his artwork. This fifth and final volume of the saga is a beautiful and touching ending, and well worth the ride in every way.

Deze graphic novel is gebaseerd op 'The man who could work miracles', een novelle van de science fictionschrijver H.G. Wells. Het verhaal draait om een man die van de ene op de andere dag ineens al zijn wensen ziet uitkomen: van kleine wensen (zoals: had ik maar meer eieren bij mijn ontbijt) tot grote (tegen een politieman: 'loop naar de hel' en weg is de politieman). De lokale priester ziet het wel zitten, een assistent die wonderen kan verrichten, maar al snel loopt het schreeuwend uit de show more hand met de wonderen, want sommige wonderen hebben onverwacht grote gevolgen. Dus is dat wel iets dat je moet willen kunnen?

De tekeningen zijn vrij sober, wel in kleur, maar met veel sombere bruin- en beigetinten en donkere blauwen. De indeling is ook redelijk rechttoe rechtaan, binnen de kaders. Een paar prachtige grote platen, van donkerblauwe nachtelijke hemels met sterren en een maan zijn een genot om naar te kijken.

Dit blijft een kort verhaal; welliswaar met een thema om over door te filosoferen, maar al met al toch iets dun. show less
