(Great care must be taken by Goodreads' volunteer librarians when merging these books. Even books that seem to have exactly the same title sometimes have significantly different content.)
I skipped the stories from Wind in the Willows as I've read the book recently.
The illustrators contributed so little that the book is not worth seeking out for their art, even if you're a fan. Commenting only on those that made a special impression on me, personally.
The Goldfish_ Eleanor Farjeon
One of my show more favorite old-fashioned authors, she reminds me of Andersen, Wilde, or MacDonald but with a lighter touch. I don't particularly feel enriched by the theme of this particular story, however.
Beauty and the Beast_Madame de Villeneuve
The original version? I wish that I had time to look now. In any case, it's very interesting, with some additional complexities, and some of the extra schmaltz removed.
Prot and Krot_Polish folktale as told by Agnes Szudek
Clever, funny, and brand-new to me.
The Hemulen Who Loved Silence_Tove Jansson
Hmm. The title intrigued me, but I'm not sure about how things worked out....
The Dancing Princesses_Walter de la Mare
The original? I wish I could find the time to research whether this great old poet actually created this story. I very much like this version, with extra thoughtful themes and less romantic fancy.
I am glad to read any from this series that I find, whether in Little Free Libraries, charity shops, or wherever, and still marvel that I never encountered them in my roles as student, parent, or teacher... it's a mystery to me. show less
