Lettering on Wood, Paper and Leather by Lora S Irish is an excellent introduction to pyrography through learning to letter.

With the exception of the old woodburning sets my parents used to get me back in the 60s, my experience with pyrography began this past holiday season when I received a kit. I have been tinkering and just kinda getting the feel, but when I saw this as an eARC I jumped at it. It gave me good information about what is available in the way of equipment, which gives me show more something to aim for as I improve. The hints and practice is wonderful and the projects give me a chance to get better as I progress from basic to less basic.

I am still learning and expect this book to be one of quite a few that will guide me. If you're a beginner, or if you've perhaps mostly been trying your hand at designs and want to learn to letter, I think this book will help you. It certainly helped me, both with technique and with motivation.

I must admit, I'm a novice when it comes to wire working. I have tried bending wire into paperclips and am dreadfully challenged. Yet this book was so beautifully done and the projects so very appealing, I found myself staying up past 2 am to finish my latest attempt to enhance my skills.

The projects are marvelous and inspiring, the directions are clear and easy to follow, and one of my favorite features is that the author uses simple, household items for many of the bends. This book is a show more keeper and well worth both the money and the time you spend completing them.

Who besides cowboys think that leather art can be beautiful? Most of us associate it with souvenir wallets and dog collars.

Burnt leather drawing is a lot like pen and ink drawing, and in "The Art of Leather Burning" Lora Irish instructs you, as a skilled artist, in how to realize beautiful effects on leather using extreme heat. Starting with how to choose tools, Ms Irish then proceeds to show how to draw and perhaps color various styles of artistic designs.

This book seems to be show more comprehensive, with good photos of tools and close-ups of artistic techniques. I think it would be very useful for someone who is already skilled at sketching, and who wants to begin working in leather.

I am quite put off by the excessive number of fonts and visual design elements used in the text. There also seems to be an unusually large number of typos and composition flaws in this ARC.

I received a review copy of "The Art of Leather Burning: Step-by-Step Pyrography Techniques" by Lora S. Irish (Dover) though NetGalley.com.
