Short biography
Emma spent her childhood creating imaginary worlds to compensate for a disappointingly average reality, so it was probably inevitable that she ended up writing fantasy and paranormal novels for young adults.

She was born in Birmingham, UK, which she fled at the first opportunity to study English Literature at Lancaster University. In her three years at Lancaster, she hiked up mountains, skydived in Australia, and endured a traumatic episode involving a swarm of bees in the Costa Rican jungle. She also wrote various novels and short stories. These included her first publication, a rather bleak dystopian piece, and a disturbing story about a homicidal duck (which she hopes will never see the light of day).

Now a reluctant graduate, Emma can usually be found in front of her writing desk. Her debut novel The Puppet Spell, published by Rowanvale Books, is a fantasy tale for young adults and the young at heart, inspired by her lifelong love of the fantastical, mythology, and video games. Emma also writes urban fantasy/supernatural novels for older teens and adults. She is currently working on several projects, including the planned 5-book upper-YA/New Adult Darkworld series. The first novel, Darkness Watching, was published in 2013 by Curiosity Quills Press.

I have read the other books in the series and would highly recommend doing so before tackling this one, since the background information is needed to fully understand the characters and appreciate their plight.

Devi is doing her best to work against the building tensions in their realm and trying to save innocent (even if they are vampire) lives. Between the growing threat of an out-right war and the burden of trying to save her best friend, she's got enough to deal with. But fate doesn't see show more it that way. Not only are the vampires now on her back, but a trip back to the shadow realms exposes a much bigger threat than anyone suspected. War is on the brink and their world as they know it is on the verge of being destroyed.

Like all of this author's novels, this one is action and adventure pure. Devi might be getting a handle on her powers, but she's by no means comfortable with them thanks to what each side of them seems to mean. This push and pull of good and evil. . .or even gray. . .makes Devi impossible not to root for. She might be kick-butt, but she's still the underdog battling for justice when few seem to care about it. The problems mount and mount, making every scene an edge of the seat read. The story is fast and furious, and pulls at the nerves and heart the whole way through.

Her friends add a wonderful spice to the book and develop even more depth as their own pasts and troubles are brought to light. It's a great balance between powerful characters, who despite this, come across as the rag-tag team with no chance. The decisions are understandable and the relations between the characters come across natural with all of their ups and downs. The romance deepens in this one, but that sits on the sidelines enough to give the story a nice add without over-powering the main plot.

This is a thrilling read for fans of magic, demons, paranormal crime, urban fantasy and tons of action.

I received an ARC and couldn't put this book down. So I wanted to leave my honest thoughts.

What I Thought of Walking Shadow:

Love. Just utter love for this series! It has everything I could every want and is so addicting. I am counting the days and hours to the release...seriously.

I loved where Walking Shadow took us in the series. There were so many changes, additions and revalations, not to mention -action, magic, maybe some love and a mysterious fortune teller!

After the finish of Darkness Watching, I was completely amped to see where the story went. I was worried for some show more characters, particularly Ash, I wanted to know more about Claudia and Berenice and Oh! was that a little love from Leo? So many questions unanswered and so much on the brink of exploding in the Darkworld.

A few questions, particularly about Claudia and Berenice, were answered in Fear's Touch (a Darkworld novella), but I needed to know where the 'sinners' were headed. With this book, we learn that the magic world is more than we first thought. We see the entrance of vampires - ugh, typical...oh wait! These vamps are NOTHING like the vamps we've read about before. It was brill to see a fantasy staple in the story, but with a major twist. I loved what Adams did with the Darkworld Series vamps, but I shall not say more, as it is an important part of the story! Just trust me, it's new and exciting.

As Ash finds herself in the middle of a world that is ever changing, exciting and under threat from the Demon's world, we see her and the whole crew grow and become a major part in the future of the world. The only question is, will Ash choose the right side, or damn the world to the demons?

I loved the demon Ash and the way she manipulated the world. It not only showed just what can happen when a foe takes your face to commit crimes, but also the strength of demons. From there we , finally, get a glimpse into the real fortune teller, or at least we think we do...

I was completely engrossed in every word that Adams had written on the pages of Walking Shadow. I found myself up late many a night, unable to put down my iPad, as I had to read one more page. I needed to know what happened. With the action, blossoming emotions and the secrets, this demon infested, fantasy story was one of the most brilliant stories I have read in a long time. I see this series becoming VERY popular. It would make an excellent film!

Overall, addicting, engrossing, unputdownable and truly a brilliant read. I highly highly recommend reading this book and the entire series. If I could give it more than 5 stars I would!

I love urban fantasy and this ticks all of my boxes.
The world was well formed and explained, believable and perfect for the story. The magic system, though a little confusing at first and not completely fleshed out yet I don't think, was well formed with a clear hierarchy as well as different strengths and weaknesses that prevented any one race/faction from being overpowered to the point of obscenity.
Ivy Lane was tough as nails and beautifully brusque, and her ability to admit to her flaws show more and second guess herself was a breath of fresh air in comparison to some of the lead characters of the books I've been reading lately. Mage Lord Vance Colton was proud, bossy and stubborn initially - to the point of being annoying I might add - but as the story progressed and his character was properly revealed I came to really like him (even if he was a little terrifying at times).
I would have liked to have seen and learnt more about Drake and Isabel, but given this is the start of a series I'm hopeful I'll get my wish in later books.
Overall, I really enjoyed this book and I'm looking forward to getting sucked back in with the next in the series in the not too distant future.

What I Thought:

I absolutely loved this little novella! It gives a great insight into the fresher year of Claudia and Berenice. We also learn about the beginning of of the group Cyrus started.

As Claudia starts to see the Darkworld, she goes from well-liked to headaches. Within one evening, she has dropped off the social ladder and even lost her best friend. Previously, she wasn't that interested in uni, and well...she still isn't, but she has to get away from her first demon sighting. She show more aims for other universities, though her parents push her toward the uni near the small town of Blackstone. It's not that she didn't want it, just she wanted an option, but she tried to push away all ideas of attending Blackstone, just like any child would when their parents want something! After she is rejected time and again, she finds herself in the pouring rain, at a bus stop, waiting to get to the uni her parents wanted. With her demon tragedy at the party, this god-awful weather and a world she didn't want any part in, life couldn't get worse...or so she thought.

Enter Berenice, well, at this moment she's squealing, running, save me I'm being chased by a shadow creature girl, but soon she'll be Berenice. With an attitude that spits knives and a tough outer shell, we instantly take an odd dislike yet like affection to her. We watch as the encounter between the two escalates.

Soon we are thrown into a blundered up mess of secret magic gatherings, demons, shadow creatures a fortune teller and the 'organisation.'

From the first page I found this novella grabbed me and wouldn't let go. I couldn't stop reading. It was like a page-turning addiction.

Personally, I would read it as the second part to the series (i.e. 1.5). Yes, it is a prequel and takes place the year before Darkness Watching, but I love feeling as though I know the future and am getting a rare moment to look back and see what led to now. I also think it helps you to understand Berenice more and actually opens up a thousand more questions about both girls and the organisation. If it were read first, I think you'd miss out.

I found that, once again, the writing style of Emma Adams was perfection. I had a fast-paced fantasy adventure, with enough detail to make me feel as though I was art of their world. There were slower moments, where you felt caught in that exact moment, only to be whisked away into the next part of the adventure.

The character depth was brilliant. You didn't get too much, as this was only a novella and an insight into those we already know, but you did get enough to make the novella an important read.

What can I say? I loved every page and highly recommend this novella. I would suggest (very much so) that you purchase the entire series (book 4 is out this year!) and dive in. You won't be able to put them down.
