Short biography
20-something tattooed potty mouth from the South living it up in NYC. Just trying to make a living on man-love and the written word. Kade Boehme is a southern boy without the charm, but all the sass. Residing in New York City, he lives off of ramen noodles and too much booze. He is the epitomy of dorkdom, only watching TV when Rachel Maddow or one of his sports teams is on. Most of his free time is spent dancing, arguing politics, or with his nose in a book. He is also a hardcore Britney Spears fangirl and has an addiction to glitter. It was after writing a short story about boys who loved each other for a less than reputable adult website that he found his true calling — and hopefully a bit more class. He hopes to write about all the romance that he personally finds himself allergic to but that others can fall in love with. He maintains that life is real and the stories should be, as well.

When I picked this up, based on the blurb and the first few pages, I thought that this was going to be the typical cat-and-mouse chase, bad boy gets shy guy, bad boy is slow to warm up to his feelings, angst, etcetera story, but it most decidedly was anything but those. It was fresh, delves into deep and unexpected issues, and had some great gems of characters.

Davy and Gavin were both great, fleshed out characters that complimented each other and slowly--actually not so slowly--came show more together to heal and support each other. Davy had a lot of shyness and social awkwardness from his isolated upbringing, and it was beautiful to watch Gavin draw him out of that, help him through his uncertainty, doubt, and fear, and give him a family. And Gavin...you think he's just a spoiled player, a shallow guy...and you thought so wrong. This story did such a good job of showing both sides of the relationship, both characters' new experiences and feelings while opening up to a real relationship and love. It showed how Gavin had been through so much, and why he acted the way he did now. But honestly, after the first little bit, I was so proud of him. He flipped his behavior around so quickly to reassure and take care of Davy. I, along with Davy, fell in love pretty quickly.

There were also some great secondary characters (their friends and Gavin's grandpa) and some not so great ones (not saying who!) but they filled out the story and added comedy, love, and support. The story was not predictable and felt fresh, keeping me intrigued the entire time. It is well worth the read.

P.S. I gotta mention the cover! I LOVED it. So, so beautiful in its dark, almost monochromatic coloring and arrangement. Plus the man (Gavin :D) is gorgeous.

Can opposites find love? It depends on their real personalities.

On the surface, this is a story of two young men whose mothers failed them in different ways, coming to terms with uneven attraction, the cracking of the masks they've built to weather life, and one shock after another threatening one or both of them. Under that, this is a story of the weight of grief, and the power love offers to ease emotional wounds both old and new. It is also a story of quiet heroism, and that always show more appeals strongly to me. show less
Ryan Borja missed out on the perfect guy when he was in college. Brady Novak was everything Ryan could want. He was attractive, charming, funny, and caring. Ryan even had a soft spot for Brady's daughter too. But Brady seemed more interested in Ryan's sister, Ellie, so Ryan thought it best to move on. Now, years later, Ellie let Ryan know that Brady has moved in nearby. She ran into him and is looking to see if she can pick up where they left off. What she doesn't know is that Ryan longs for show more the same chance. If only Brady was looking to do the same...

To me, it is often a mark of good writing when a book goes by quickly but tells a complete story. The flow here is excellent, and I reached the end of the book surprised that it had gone by so quickly but not for a moment feeling like anything was missing. The story is interesting--some interesting family dynamics at play on both sides--and is a nice read for a rainy day or a warm afternoon on the beach.

I hated both the main characters.

But I was totally invested in the way their relationship developed. Which was a weird feeling. But I did learn that I have to at least like one character to enjoy a story more than I did this one.
