This was a favourite as a child, and I recently picked up a copy at a secondhand shop and found I enjoyed it just as much. I love old churches and ghost stories, so this is perfect. The story is well-plotted and well-paced, there is a mountain of interesting detail about the operations and running of a cathedral, and the characters are likeable and endearing. Highly recommended for teenagers and adults alike.
This was the last book I needed to complete the Darnley Mills series. It took about ten years of constant ebay monitoring to find one at a price that was reasonable. I first stumbled on Philip Turner's writing under one of his pseudonyms, Steven Chance, with Septimus and the Minister Ghost, which I enjoyed immensely as a youngster. The internet revealed the other books in the late 90's, and I have been on the hunt ever since. Well worth the effort, the series is enjoyable.
First in a series by Philip Turner covering the childhood adventures of Peter, David and Arthur in the town of Darnley Mills, somewhere in northeastern England in the 1960s. I enjoyed it immensely as a teenager and still found it enjoyable when I read it again, after finding it in my mother's collection, in early 2008. I'm not sure I'd recommend it to anybody in particular in the early 21st century, but it was a significant part of my childhood and therefore worth a positive review.
I did not read much of it; this retelling of selected parts of the Bible---Old and New Testaments---has a lot of extra flowery phrases meant to make it more approachable, I guess.
