There's a lot going on in this book and it's quite a ride! High profile murder case, empathic almost lawyer, mobsters, romance, controlling billionaire, kidnapping...it's all in here. I really like the story but it does end abruptly as it is just the first in a series. If you don't like waiting to finish the story then you need to wait for all of them to be published. I will definitely be waiting on pins and needles to read the next installment.

I was given an ARC in exchange for an honest show more review. show less
I loved the cover but not the book. I was not sure whether this was a romance novel or the script for a porn movie. Probably because I'm not on board with complete strangers sticking their appendages where they are supposed to be. I can understand the lust factor but at least know who you get into bed with. Also the narratives and dialogues are irritating. On one hand the characters are well educated and successful and then the dialogues depict them as dumb and naive. On the upside, there is show more a substantial storyline in here but the in your face porn style sex scenes distract from that. I might read the next installments just to see where this story goes and how it ends but I will definitely be skipping over the naked parts.

I'm all for a good cliffhanger, but this one felt like the story was just cut off. Scotty and Nick were so wishy washy that i had a hard time connecting with either one of them. What Scotty went through as a teen was horrible and for Nick to even entertain the thought that it was a lie is beyond me. Nick says he loves her through most of the book, but the first time he hears office gossip he believes it and doesn't even give Scotty a chance to explain what really happened. While claiming to show more still love Scotty he just jumps into a relationship with someone else and pretty much dismisses Scotty. I'm glad that they finally git together and Scotty overcame her fears, but the ending was rushed and yes, what Portia did was wrong it kind of reminded me of another series that i have read.... show less
Well I tried with this one, but I am at odds with the writing style. This is my second endeavor by this author, the first being [b:Exposure|24844065|Exposure (Exposure, #1)|Annie Jocoby|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1423163138s/24844065.jpg|44155344]. I ended up feeling similar regarding both attempts. I couldn't connect with the characters, and they seemed very immature to me for what their stations in life were supposed to be.

I will start with Scotty, this tortured heroine who has a drunk show more for a mother and was sexually abused by a foster father. This is a horrible situation... but I never really felt for Scotty. There was not much to trigger any emotion in me. I felt like she was a perma-victim and whiny and needed a backbone. Normally with a tortured heroine, I get some kind of emotional connection. But I got not an iota of empathy here.

Moving on to Nick... he utterly confused me. He was all about Ryan and Iris - referring to these people and their life and how he loved them like I was supposed to know who they are. Turns out - this is a spinoff of the Illusions series (which was Ryan and Iris' story). I have not read that series and would have liked to have known that I needed to read it first. This Broken series does not seem to be a standalone to me because of the constant referencing to the other people. Nick also started talking about Rielle and his girls somewhere after 25% and I was like - Who? Turns out he has an ex-wife and two daughters. That must have also been part of the original series because we got no backstory there. Nick is a shallow d-bag. He is very immature for someone who is supposed to be a renowned rich architect. I didn't like his manwhore behavior... and it didn't make sense that he had this instalove for the perma-victim in Scotty.

Nothing fit to me. This author is super nice so I hate that I can't get down with the writing style. It may be just me... my friend Deanna likes this author and her stories. But I have not been able to make myself finish one. DNF at 38%.
