I am a sucker for enemies to lovers tropes and boy, there is no love lost between the protagonists in this one. I loved Willow and Warrick in [b:A Curse in Darkness|58487801|A Curse in Darkness (The Thornheart Trials #1)|Sherilee Gray|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1625442508l/58487801._SX50_.jpg|91837301], but I devoured Draven and Iris's story. The hate coming off these two is palpable and I couldn't wait for the tables to turn.
Witches are show more disappearing in Roxburgh which seems to be related to Iris's dangerous task decreed by mother earth to save her coven from losing their magical powers. If that isn't enough, Iris needs help from the alpha wolf of the Silver Claw pack who seems to hate her with a fiery passion. After turning her down, she almost gets herself killed by unknown enemies, and the alpha saves her life. It seems he's reluctantly changed his mind to protect her whether she likes it or not.
The chemistry between Iris and Draven is off the charts. His hatred toward Iris is so intense as he holds her responsible for his pack's three-hundred-year-old exile initiated by Iris's ancestor. Draven believes she is the witch who placed the curse on his pack and he plans to seek revenge. The loathing and lust they both feel are so hot as Draven's control is slipping and Iris's sassy mouth just gets her in more trouble. Iris is reckless and Draven is determined to protect her no matter his feelings toward her. Iris has vowed never to have a relationship again because of the guilt and shame she felt from the unforgivable betrayal of an evil man she thought she loved; the man who almost killed her and her family and left the black scar on her face. Draven's uncontrollable pull to Iris is frustrating and insane. He would never trust a witch again, but he realizes he was wrong about who Iris is and cannot stay away from her. As Iris gets closer to completing her brutal and terrifying task, the more she needs Draven's help. When Draven realizes their fate and Iris resists, he makes the decision for both of them by forcing them to confront their feelings. Learning to trust each other causes misunderstandings and deep self-reflection that finally brings them together in an extremely rewarding union.
The lead-up to the completion of Iris's task is explosive and nerve-wracking. Iris's life is on the line as she fights to stop an evil from destroying everything she holds dear and with the author's wonderful imagination and detailed prose, it's a fantastic and suspenseful ending.
The supporting characters include new and old. Draven's pack family is vital to accepting Iris into their fold and Asher is an honest and sassy warrior who steps up to the task. Iris's sisters are also important to the story as they support Iris with her troubling and critical journey. I can't wait to read Rose and Ronan's story.
Overall, I highly recommend this delightful and magical book and series filled with strong-willed women, possessive men, and perilous adventures.
Thank you to Ms. Gray for giving me the opportunity to read this book with no expectation of a positive review. show less

Swerve by Sherilee Gray
Boosted Hearts #1
Oh my! I thought, “Let me just see how steamy this book might be.” So, I searched a word and started reading. I turned the light off, because it was just before midnight, and could not sleep…so…I turned the light back on, started at the beginning and could not stop reading till I finished the book in the wee hours of the morning.
What can I say BUT…I loved this book!
Why?
* Hugh was a hunk with a heart of gold
* Shay was a sweetheart – in show more more ways than one
* The chemistry was off the charts
* Hugh & Shay were perfect for one another
* The supporting characters, especially the males, were worthy of having their own books
* It made me happy
* I would love to have these people as friends
* Oh…and…it was HOT!

Beautiful Killer took my poor heart by sneak attack! I was not prepared for the feels!! Sunny has such a heartbreaking story; except on its face, it doesn't seem that heartbreaking. Reading her day to day life though made my heart hurt for her. You never realize how sad being alone can be. I mean, she literally has NO ONE. And frankly, she hasn't had anyone most of her life. At first, I was like "Meh that sucks, but not a tragedy". Sunny's experiences, even the mundane, made me realize what show more a tragedy being truly alone could be!
At first, the story reminded me a LOT of Mystery Man by Kristen Ashley. Except, I liked this story more. In Mystery Man I did NOT like Hawk. He was kind of douche-y. Zeke on the other hand, is sympathetic as a hero. Dealing with an ex-fiance who cheated on him and aborted their baby along with survivor's guilt from his time in the army, Zeke is an incredibly complex character. He certainly isn't looking for female companionship, but Sunny approaches him and he simply can't say no.
Sunny had been a shooting star through my endlessly starless night. A flash of brilliant light in the darkness. Perfect, but fleeting.
See what I mean?! Zeke is a damaged hero, but still evokes sympathy! Since Sunny is just happy to have whatever broken pieces of himself Zeke is willing to give, they never share any info about their lives. He shows up at night then leaves once they are done. Sunny, lonely as she is, accepts this arrangement, telling herself that she will just enjoy this small bit of happiness while it lasts. She doesn't push Zeke for more and she doesn't beg when he leaves. I think that makes it so much sadder! Seriously, I cried so many times for Sunny!
Later that night, as I got into my car and headed for home, knowing that Sunny would be there when I walked in the door, that emotion came over me again, the one I hadn't felt in a fucking long time. Happiness. I hated myself for it.
Gah-Zeke...I mean, talk about guilt!! Its heartbreaking!
There is also danger. Someone attacks Sunny; the cops have no leads. This danger adds a lot of suspense to the story and totally kept me wondering what would happen (I will admit I thought it was PRETTY obvious who was behind it all, but it didn't dull that mystery of WHAT would happen, you know?)
Beautiful Killer is book 3 in the series but I have not read the previous books and it didn't affect my enjoyment of the story. However, you better believe I am grabbing those 2 books right away! Beautiful Killer was an emotional and authentic read that made me cry and hope for Sunny and Zeke!
But one thing I was sure of: I was utterly, desperately, hopelessly in love with him.
So am I, Sunny. So I am.
- POV: dual 1st
- Tears: yes!
- Trope: security/PI, ex-military
- Triggers: none
- Series/Standalone: stand alone within an interconnected series
- Cliffhanger:
no - HEA:
yes with epilogue
Mystery Man by Kristen Ashley, The Until Series by Aurora Rose Reynolds, The Raven Riders series by Laura Kaye...then you will probably like Beautiful Killer!

I'm feeling a little shattered myself as I finish this book. What a hard life Lulu and Hunter have had and yet with each other they find their safe haven. And after everything they've been through that son of a female dog Pierce still tries to make their life miserable. I'm so happy at the ending he gets because these two deserve a break. And Josh is such a honey bunny cutie! Hunter's absolute acceptance of Josh got me so emotional. He was so honorable and didn't want to repeat his father's show more mistakes. I think I'm crushing on Hunter just a little bit.
