Jones has an impressively analytical approach to how to live life in all its fullness - predating many of the 21st century's approaches to life coaching. He addresses obstacles to a happy life (many from within ourselves) but also resources we can find - both internal and external - to orientate ourselves to a happy life. A year with this book is a year well spent!
What happens when a man who has devoted his life to actively following and preaching God's Word suddenly at the age of 88 suffers a debilitating stroke? For E. Stanley Jones, missionary to India, it was a great opportunity to demonstrate to the world that even in such a desperate condition, God was still the unshakable Yes. There would be no bitterness or self-pity or questioning of God's ways, but rather a full use of whatever faculties remained to affirm the very substance of what he had show more spent his life proclaiming. He stated, "I've been saying across the years that in the Cross is Victory, and now I have to pick up that Cross in a new sense and show that it is the Victory!" Through great effort for he had lost most of his sight, speech and mobility, he was able with help to write this his final book to reassure all that the worst that life may bring can not only be endured but be a triumphant testimony to overcoming victory in Christ. show less
I was impressed by what he had to say and how he said it. There is no question that the work is dated. He has spoken to Gandhi multiple times but he thinks of Gandhi's campaign as a noble failure (because at the time that it was written, it was precisely that. Very grateful to have read this book.
A biography of Gandhi written by a world-famous missionary/evangelist in India during the 40 turbulent years of the country's struggle for independence. An intimate friend of Gandhi, with whom the author often disagreed, but who showed the author "more of the spirit of Christ than perhaps any other [person] East or West.
