The Little Brown Jay tells the story of a beautiful princess in India with an ugly voice who wants to have the lovely voice of the brown jay so she can win the heart of a blind prince. The brown jay gives the princess his beautiful voice and in return she turns him into a blue jay using the magic power of wishing on the lotus flower. This was an interesting example of a legend from another culture and I would want to use it in my teaching to expose my students to different stories from show more various parts of the world. This book would be appropriate for Grades 2-4 and it suited for themes of multiculturalism, legends/folktales/fables, and the gift of giving. show less

This little brown Jay is about a princess who wants to marry a prince but has an unattractive characteristic and must engage in a trade with an unlikely friend. This book was very magical and had a great theme of kindness. The little brown Jay would be suitable for the grades of 1-2.
