I've enjoyed Mary Fleener's work in the past, but this book is just silly. She tries to impart real information about bees, but couches it in a work of fiction that just made me constantly cringe with its stilted dialogue, unrealistic characters and heavy-handed moral lessons. I'd say it was aimed at young readers except it includes adult language, so I'm not sure who it is intended for. Definitely not me, anyhow.
Loose lively and carefully researched full-page (no panels) drawings of flora and fauna alternate with wild Cubist impressions when animals fight. As cruel as nature and humans get. Perfect for mature 12 year olds (lots of intra-animal battles, little gore)
Yup, still makes me laugh out loud. Mary is such a good storyteller that the fabulous art is like frosting on the comic cake.
I only wish there were a few more books I could add to my collection of women cartoonists.
