- Anne Mazer is the oldest of four children of the novelists Norma Fox Mazer and Harry Mazer. She had a childhood full of books and said that she loved reading so much she would often sneak out of high school to go to the library. After high school, she went on to study art at Syracuse University's School of Visual and Performing Arts. She also studied French language and literature at the Sorbonne in Paris, where she lived for three years. Her first published work, Watch Me, was a critically acclaimed picture book for children. Moose Street, published two years later, was a Booklist Editor's Choice for Best Book of 1992. Among her numerous other books, The Salamander Room (1994) is considered a classic, though Anne Mazer is probably best known as the author of The Amazing Days of Abby Hayes series. Her short stories have been included in anthologies, and she herself has edited four anthologies for teenage readers, several of which have been named New York Public Library Best Books for Teens. In 2010, she co-authored with Ellen Potter the book Spilling Ink: A Handbook for Young Writers. She is an artist-in-residence at Colgate University.

Liked this more than I thought I would. Most writing books one reads are really dense but this one wasn't. Also some unique advice which tends to be lacking in most writing books.
This is definitely what I wanted my bedroom to be like when I was a kid. That said, I was really hoping there would be a message at the end of the story gently telling kids that animals need to stay in their outside, natural habitats. I don't love that this book seemed to imply that it was okay to take a wild animal home with you.
"When you sit down to write a story, you are embarking on a wild ocean voyage. You don't know where you are going, or what sort of storms you might sail into along the way. You might get shipwrecked by writer's block... But don't worry. Another ship is sure to sail into view and it will whisk you right back out into those tumbling, unpredictable waters of your brilliant imagination!" Spilling Ink is a delightful book of writing ideas, advice, and "dares" for beginning writers. Instead of show more chapters, there are themed sections, each dealing with a particular aspect of writing, from description to dialogue to creating setting and mood. The authors have a wonderful sense of humor! Each section subtitle is slightly goofy: "Adventures With Shoe-Box Dioramas" and "Competing With Smooshed Toads" were two of my favorites. I hope that this book finds its way into many aspiring writers' (and teachers') hands... I think it will make writing even more enjoyable for all! show less
I can't count the number of times I read this aloud to my usually story-phobic kid. He preferred field guides to narratives, but would always sit still for this lovely, quiet story of a boy who loved salamanders so much he would remodel his room for their comfort. I love this book with all my heart.
