I really didn't know what to expect when I bought these books as some of the reviews are mixed, but I decided I would go ahead and buy them to see if I would enjoy it. I was kind of looking for something that had sword fighting and sorcery. I do say I found it with these books. As I began to read it and I became more involved with the storyline, it seemed to remind me of Lord of the Rings.
With buying four books all at once I was able to really become involved with the storyline and show more characters quickly. The story revolves around a knight named, Ridmark Arban, who is banned from his kingdom and has been marked as a traitor. To regain his honor, he embarks on a quest to keep the Frostborn from returning.
There is plenty of action in this book with the swords and sorcery and it kept me entertained. There are a few more books left in this series and I will be looking forward to reading the continuing saga of Ridmark. Giving the book 4 stars. show less

This is a very entertaining book, with a plot very well constructed and characters enjoyable. Our main character is a young lady named Caina. She lives in a world surrounded by sorcery and nobility. Her mother was denied a formal sorcerer training for lack of aptitude and she joins an alternate clan that plays with dangerous sorcery, the necromancers. She sells her daughter Caina to the most powerful of the necromancers' sorcerers, Maglarion. After a close call with death, Caina manages to show more escape from Maglarion and joins a legendary society called the Ghosts, that act as spies and assassins for the Emperor of Nighmar. The Ghosts were summon by her father before he died in the hands of Maglarion. Caina is trained on how to disguise and stealth, how to infiltrate and murder. She becomes a powerful weapon for the Ghosts in their fight against the sorcery. And the story develops in a very fast pace and all the plots and twist should be savored with delight. There is a sequel to this book named "Ghost in the Flames" that I placed in my "To Read" list and I intent to do that in the first opportunity I have, as I am really curious to see how the life of our heroine Caina will develop as a Ghost nighfighter.
I recommend this book to the permanent library of all readers that enjoy a very well written book with an young adult theme. I bought this book from Amazon.com and I was not requested to provide a positive review. Opinion expressed here is my own. show less

I got this in 2016 out of admiration for the author’s decision to decline nomination for the Hugo Awards; his story had been boosted onto the final ballot by slating and he wanted very much to distance himself from it, and not only that, he kept quiet about it until the full results were announced. However it took me until now to get around to reading it. It’s a well-written enough story of horrors lurking between the show more stars, while humans fight the artificial intelligences they have created, with some interesting narrative twists. I’d still have voted for the winner of this category, “Folding Beijing”. show less

This belongs into a fan-fiction forum. Not an actual book.
The MC is uber-powerful with an infinite number of incredible abilities to the point where the author has to constantly make up bullshit to even create any kind of stakes.
But she also has a really horrible past that haunts her and makes her brooding and a bit cynical because that is what the stereotype template calls for.
Every good guy is super smart and awesome and it couldn't be more obvious who will betray the good guys even though show more I haven't even gotten to any kind of betrayal before dropping the book.
The bad guys are just evil for the sake of it or because that is their purpose.
A lot of stuff gets constantly repeated ad nauseam. I have criticized other books for this sadly somewhat common flaw before but I have never encountered it to such an absurd degree.
I am confident this book has never seen an editor.
I don't see anything here beyond a shallow power fantasy that tries to do everything and accomplishes nothing.
This is honestly how I would have written a caricature about the worst urban fantasy clichées. show less
