Gronny the ogre spies children playing baseball. As he is about to share with his family this new scare target, he does something an ogre has never done before - yawn! Story itself is a bit of yawn, has potential but has a bit of a disjointed flow that causes me to hold back a star.
This quirky, kid-geared book of poems has appeal for students and teachers alike. The pages are filled with fun illustrations and silly poetry and tips for writing. There are explanations of the rhythm and beat of poetry and how to use it. The author provides plenty of advice on how to find a topic to write about and ideas to start writing with. There is even practical advice on how to prep for the poem like loosen lips, practice tounge flapping, and more!

"I Did it Because" came home with me show more today because I was hooked on the steps for poem prep. I went searching for poetry books that would make me an instant fan of poetry (which I am not) and decode the secret in them that everyone else seems to get. When I thumbed through this book and found the humor in loosen lips, and practice tounge flapping I knew this was going to be great. It is. I have to say my favorite poem out of this book is "What I'd Like to Know."

I would use this book in the classroom as a definite reference and support for learning to write poetry. I would like to try out the idea having the students come up with the beat first, and then putting words to the beat. This is also a great helper to generate writing ideas and journal entries as well.

No matter what your age if you are a hockey fan, you will enjoy this book. It is comprised of humorous and fun poems about the great sport of hockey. The illustrations are entertaining and the content witty.

This short 32 page book will put a smile on your face, whether you play the sport or are a fan.
Nothing beats a Pizza by Loris Lesynski has slot of information throughout the book. There are different poems which are labeled ingredients on the table of content page. The poem I would focus on is “Nothing-Beat-beat –beats A Pizza.” The poem says, “Nothing beats a pizza / when you’re in a pizza mood / because a pizza isn’t anything / like any other food / other food is neat and tidy / pizza’s slippy pizza’s slidey / (makes me full and satisfied-y nicest slices now inside show more me) when we want to eat a pizza / then its better having two / ‘cuz just one pizza’s not enough / for me and you / and you / and you / and you and you and YOU.” Choosing this book as a reader, I thought the book would be all about pizza because looking at the front cover you see a picture of a pizza but when you open the book you see a lot of words. There is more than one poem on a page which could be confusing for some children. I would use this book for a fun activity for example if I am having a pizza party, I would read this poem aloud to my students as we prepare ourselves to enjoy pizza. Most kids will enjoy this poem because a lot of them love pizza. The book talks about different ways we could get pizza, by ordering it or making it. This book should be used for fourth or fifth grade because of the style in which it is written, the younger ones would get confused by the maximum amount of words on each page. show less
