This is a departure from the usual Welsh-English/English-Welsh dictionary in that it gives actual definitions, in Welsh, for Welsh words. At the end of each entry, there's a brief translation into English, but this dictionary is most useful for its definitions. The language is just simple enough for a learner to grasp, with none of that "of/and/or/pertaining to the state of being..." sort of thing that's so unhelpful even in your native language. There are many black-and-white illustrations show more to help you along, and there's a beautiful section in color of fruit, trees, birds, and all kinds of other things, which is great for giving a visual boost to your vocabulary. In addition, there's a surprisingly good English/Welsh section at the back. Every learner should have this in his/her library. show less
This is a (nearly) monolingual Welsh dictionary, primarily designed for children, but has several features making it useful as a dictionary for learners too. As well as lots of nice pictures, it gives a short English gloss at the end of each entry and provides a fairly comprehensive English -> Welsh index at the back, which makes it useful as a translation dictionary. Like any single language dictionary, it provides definitions of terms, which is great for extending your vocabulary and also show more for ensuring that you are using the correct word (a big danger with bilingual dictionaries, which often don't give enough context to make an informed choice). It has a good range of vocabulary, certainly enough for everyday use, and includes some more obscure or archaic terms. show less
