Que a existência seja inútil não é simples banalidade. É o que estimula esse livro complexo. Ele defende duas contenções (posições controversas): (1) o desencantamento do mundo, promovido pelo iluminismo, é uma consequência necessária e revigorante, isto é, positiva, dos poderes da razão. (2) Existe uma realidade independente de nós, indiferente à nossa existência, nossos valores e significados. Assim, o niilismo é uma oportunidade especulativa de acessar um pensamento show more cujos interesses não coincidam com os dos vivos.

Cada capítulo esmiuça um autor ou grupos de autores-obras segundo uma problemática relacionada ao tema. O que torna a leitura bastante difícil no caso daquelas obras as quais não se conhece. Brassier procede por tentar valorizar ao máximo cada opositor e aliado, detalhando méritos naqueles que irá descartar, e apontando falhas naqueles que irá se apoiar. É um autor de uma generosidade engajada - de esforço analítico radical, e de um vocabulário terrivelmente extenso (preparem seus dicionários). Mesmo que seus argumentos tentem ser claros e contundentes, a complexidade argumentativa pode ser um empecilho. Funciona melhor para os autores que já se conhece, no meu caso: Sellars, Meillassoux, Heidegger, Deleuze, Nietzsche. A leitura dos apoiados sobre a obra de Adorno e Badiou foi conturbada, e existe um problema de inteligibilidade, de complicação, no capítulo sobre o já obscuro e complicado por fama Laruelle.

De toda forma, é bonito chegar na última seção final do livro, em um tópico bastante curto, e ler ali condensado o percurso do livro, que a princípio parece disparatado, embora brilhante. Certamente não é algo para se ler apenas uma vez. show less

The thesis tries to define and explain the rudiments of a 'nonphilosophical' or 'non-decisional' theory of materialism on the basis of a theoretical framework provided by the 'non-philosophy' of Francois Laruelle. Neither anti-philosophical nor anti-materialist in character, non-materialism tries to construct a rigorously transcendental theory of matter by using certain instances of philosophical materialism as its source material. The materialist decision to identify the real with matter is show more seen to retain a structural isomorphy with the phenomenological decision to identify the real with the phenomenon. Both decisions are shown to operate on the basis of a methodological idealism; materialism on account of its confusion of matter and concept; phenomenology by virtue of its confusion of phenomenon and logos. By dissolving the respectively 'materiological' and 'phenomenological' amphibolies which are the result of the failure to effect a rigorously transcendental separation between matter and concept on the one hand; and between phenomenon and logos on the other, non-materialist theory proposes to mobilise the non-hybrid or non-decisional concepts of a 'matter-without-concept' and of a 'phenomenon-without-logos' in order to effect a unified but non-unitary theory of phenomenology and materialism. The result is a materialisation of thinking that operates according to matter's foreclosure to decision. That is to say, a transcendental theory of the phenomenon that licenses limitless phenomenological plasticity, unconstrained by the apparatus of eidetic intuition or any horizon of apophantic disclosure; yet one which is simultaneously a transcendental theory of matter, uncontaminated by the bounds of empirical perception and free of all phenomenological circumscription. show less
