It's funny how a book can rather sneak up on you. In the beginning, my impressions of A Sound of Crying weren't particularly positive--the dialogue and characters seemed distractingly dated, and the children were so formal as to seem entirely unchildlike. It was easy reading, but nothing I could pull myself into. And yet. At some point, the story here became something I couldn't walk away from, with characters who felt real and true to their own world, no different from children I might show more happen across in reality. The story came to life, frightening me and making me wonder. And, in the end, I was charmed.
I'm glad to have found this little book--it's one I'll remember, and very likely pass on to young readers who have the patience for an old-fashioned ghost story.

One of the best ghost-time travel books I've read. And that's saying quite a bit since I voraciously read and collect both these genres and combinations. I hear there are sequels to this book!
From cover: "What a sinister place to live!" Polly exclaims the very first moment she sees her cousin's house. "I'll bet it's haunted."
"It's not!" Frederick snaps back. "And there'sno such thing as a ghost!" But before long, even Frederick begins to wonder. As for Polly...she must find out the truth show more about the lonely 19th century girl who comes alive each night in Polly's frightening dreams. show less
