Judy Hall’s Crystal Bible (and subsequent volumes) is touted as being one of the best volumes for exploring crystals. Now, I’ve craved these books for my collection - but refused to pay full price - for years, but finally got my hands on them recently for a steal from the thrift shop! After excitedly delving into volume one, though, I find myself a bit underwhelmed. Of course, it’s easy to be disappointed when we’ve gotten access to such a wide range of crystals and gemstones in show more 2024, and there’s obviously a reason why there are additional volumes that Hall subsequently published, but even the content that we got in this book seemed a bit… off. Presented alphabetically, the book is definitely easy to use and reference (with a handy index at the back to direct via crystal use, colour, etc), but I was not a huge fan of the narration. Hall’s vocabulary lacks the passion of modern crystal enthusiasts and instead is mired in the techno-jargon that the esoteric community adopted for “legitimacy” a generation ago - which doesn’t really age well in my eyes. Programming crystals, pseudo-medical terminology, and an overly academic tone does not make me inspired to get out my rocks (lol). At least her information is sound when it comes to the underlying crystal uses, even if she does lack the magical whimsy of other books which connect the stones more closely to mythology, legend, and the natural elements. As a set, I am glad to have these in my collection, though, since it’s a lot easier to reference one source with a consistent tone (even if it lacks some inspiration) than wading into the quagmire that is the occult web presence. show less
I received a free copy through Goodreads.

Wow the pictures of the crystals are so vibrant and stunning, so much so that I felt like I could see every tiny detail and just reach out and grab it.

It is very information, everything you would ever want to or need to know about crystals is in this encyclopedia. I never knew there was so much crystals nor the meaning behind most of them. It has certainly opened my eyes and mind to the wonders of geology. The little tid bit about the chakra and show more healing properties are interesting. Even if you aren't into new age stuff, this encyclopedia is worth it for the pictures and information alone. show less
When this book calls itself "your complete crystal workshop in a book," it's telling the truth. From the first steps in getting comfortable with the idea of working with gemstones to more advanced healing and ritual work, Judy Hall's text lays a fine foundation for anyone seeking to work with gemstones in a spiritual practice. The book comes with a cd narrating the various exercises and rituals. In addition, at each point of a new exercise she includes steps to take if the student does not show more yet feel ready to take on this exercise.

My only irritation with the book is the over-use of New Age terminology. I don't buy into the idea that people alive at this time are inherently more able to become more spiritually aware or enlightened compared to any other time in history. Also, I do admit to wondering about the wisdom of using so many stones when they are obtained through strip mining in almost all cases. (In case anyone is wondering, I now prefer buying stones second-hand and giving them a thorough cleansing.)

That said, I appreciate that someone has written such a thorough guide to take a person through the foundation of this education. Highly recommended.

I think the concept of past lives is amazing. Why shouldn't we consider that we get a new chance to work on our karmic crap? :)

Judy Hall writes very pleasantly! Definitely would recommend this to people who are familiar with the subject of astrology. It can get pretty complex with all the chart analysis, and aspect chatter.
