How things change. In 1969, this slim volume was a pretty good guide to the preserved railways of Britain. Then, as the preservation movement gained ground, it became quickly outmoded and irrelevant. Now, forty years later, it is a useful source for the history of preserved railways, telling the story of its early days from a contemporary perspective. This is now much more relevant as the movement begins to celebrate its half-century.

There is a feature on `Kyle of Lochalsh - service reprieved'. That took on some kind of mythical signifcance for me and once, just once, I managed to travel that beautiful route.
