Best seen as a heavily annotated picture book rather than an illustrated history, this is filled with rich commentary on aspects of an idiosyncratic of minor UK railway lines mostly lost. The inclusion of loosely related features on miniature railways such as narrow-gauge, models and toys is a clear indicatio that this more about nostalgia than history. That is no fault of the book and the explicitly eclectic "Scrapbook" section demonstrates that the author's aim is to share visual reminders show more of a lost past. Even so, I would have preferred to see a little more history amid the reminiscence and entertainment. show less
Nice idea, but repetitive text and pictures. Also the regions Atterbury creates are a bit odd - not really reflecting the old railway companies
This is good if you can pick it up cheaply; great photos, captions and nostalgia. Sad facts too, for instance, part of the track between Evercreech and Glastonbury now forms part of a cycleway and footpath known as Sustrans Route 3.
